MATHEMATICS PROJECT AT MBULIRE SECONDARY SCHOOL

Our first collaboration with the World Mathematics Fund (WWF) is already bearing fruit at the secondary school in Mbulire, where the WWF sponsored a mathematics project carried out by REFU and the school administration. In July 2025, the WWF made funds available to the school's mathematics department. The funds amounted to 3,531.80 euros. The contact person is Aisha Ssali, the coordinator for REFU in the Netherlands.

Mbulire Secondary School is a government- and church-supported school in the rural district of Bukomansimbi. The school has many rural students, most of whom come from the families of the people who perished during the war of 1981-86. The intervention of various parties, such as REFU, the church, the local government, and other volunteers, helps the school improve its infrastructure.

The students of S.4 and S.6 can prepare well for the national exams and potentially go on to study at a college or university.

Thanks to the addition of 324 new mathematics textbooks, the school now has a good library where students can borrow books.

The pupils and teachers are so motivated, inspired, and enthusiastic about the project materials. They show a significant improvement in their confidence in understanding and solving mathematical problems.

More Project results from Mbulire - WWF partnership

The students can solve many mathematical problems. They can easily solve the questions from the national exams, as well as the questions they receive from other local schools. The pupils can debate various mathematical problems with other pupils in the neighborhood.

Training of teachers: Excursions and training trips for teachers: So far, in this first phase of the project, the teachers have made one trip to Nyendo Mukungwe and one trip to Kampala. So, two trips in total. They still need to make two more trips to the aforementioned places, as stated in the project schedule. We are planning these trips for the second phase of the project, which starts in June 2026. We are currently still in the first phase.

Books and Geometrical sets

The tables below provide an overview of the books purchased from Longhorn Publishing. A total of 8,937,000 Ugandan shillings was spent on this. The receipts from Longhorn Publishing can be found in the attachments.. We purchased the geometrical sets from Enber Holdings Limited. In total, we spent 3,986,500, and the receipt is attached.

Some statistics about the project

Statistics

Of the 177 students in class S.4, only 25% passed statistics before the project. As of February 2026, 75.2% or more of the students have a passing grade in statistics. Geometry Of the 177 students in class S.4, only 34.6% passed the geometry project. Since February 2026, 61.3% or more of the students have a passing grade in geometry.

Trigonometry Of the 177 students in class S.4, only 31% passed the trigonometry project. Since June, 67.7% or more of the students have a passing grade in trigonometry.

Algebra Of the 177 students in class S.4, only 22.9% passed the algebra project. Since November 2025, 65.2% or more of the students have a passing grade in algebra.

Others There was also a significant increase in passing calculus (by 45.6%), probability (by 58%), graphs and quadratic functions (with 48%)
