Infrastructure in schools

Many schools in our area of operation lack basic facilities and infrastructure. Many schools are overpopulated, and this puts pressure on their existing toilets, water resources, study materials such as laboratories, libraries, classrooms, sporting facilities, etc. This makes studying very difficult and leads to poor performance. These schools are characterized by:
- Huge student populations
- Students from poor families- Students have less or no access to study books
- Small libraries and a few books to cover all students- Small or laboratories at all
- A few toilets that inconveniences the students
- Small or entertainment facilities

What is REFU doing?
- We are buying water tanks, building underground wells and constructing boreholes in schools
- We are building libraries, renovating libraries and stocking them with books
- We are proving thousands of books, focusing on sciences books that these schools do not have
- We are setting up new laboratories and renovating pre-existing ones
- We are assisting these schools set up sports grounds

Improvement in Sciences

The average number of students in the schools we assist who excel in science subjects has jumped from 21% in 2019 to 53% in 2024, according to research conducted by REFU in collaboration with Nakaseke district education board. REFU also conducted independent research in Bukomansimbi and Luwero districts, although the district education boards were not involved.
- Teachers from the rural schools of Nakasongola army secondary school, St. Agnes Natyole, Mpigi secondary school, Kibinge secondary school, Misanvu SS, Uganda Martyrs Buyoga SS, Butenga Parents SS, Mbulire SS among other schools have been trained in teaching science subjects through workshops, study trips, and further education.
- REFU has conducted many projects, including Mathematical projects, Physics projects, Chemistry projects and Biology projects. We have hereby trained teachers, engaged students in debates, given books to schools, built and renovated libraries and laboratories. We have trained students on the use of books and laboratory equipment. We have done a number of Mathematics and Physics projects in school such as Mbulire SS, Butenga Parents, Nakaseke secondary school, Magoma SS, Wakyato SS, and Standard High School.
- We have also built and renovated libraries and laboratories in the above named schools, and stocked them with books and equipment

School dropouts to school

REFU has helped many school dropouts in rural areas go back to school. These include Young girls who got pregnant and had a baby, Orphans, Students from poor families, Students who failed to rejoin school due to the negative effects of Covid19 and Students who face domestic violence and school-based violence and abuse.
- We have enrolled hundreds of young mothers back to school. We look for them in the villages, we provide for them all the school needs and we monitor their progress
- We have gotten sponsors to sponsor poor students at school, so that they can sustainably study without any disturbance.
- We work together with our partners such as BUCADEF, Buganda Youth Council, NAYODI among other, who offer scholarships in different rural schools for these students.
-We have facilities to schools that enroll school dropouts and orphans. We help build libraries, laboratories, toilets, we provide books, calculators, etc.
- We have assisted teachers in schools that enroll school dropouts. We give these teachers training trips, shoes, laptops etc. to ease and facilitate their workWe have provided Books, Pens, Food, Transport, School bags to facilitate students

New library at Kiryassaaka Secondary school

''We begun building our new library in 2019, but the progress was halted by Covid19. We had no where to resume because we had less students in the school and this meant less finances. REFU intervened and sponsored us with bricks, timber and books. Our library now has more that 716 books. Yes! Our new library

Makukuulu Secondary School officially opened its renovated library in april 2024. REFU established this project in march 2023 partly funded by STIR Education. The library has a capacity of 1024 books of all sedondary subjects. Overall academic performance has improved, seen from the results by the students.

Better sanitation

REFU constructed a new latrine block at Mulama Secondary School in Nakaseke. ''The pressure has reduced. The old latrine block was almost full, and the olace was smelly. Some students were getting sick, and we suspect it was due to poor hygien and sanitation. We expect this latrine to take 15 years without any disturbances'' Thomas Migadde, teacher

Akot back to school

''I got a baby during Covid 19 lock down when we were not going to school. Being an orphan from Northern Uganda, all hope was lost. Worst of all, the man who got me pregnant left for Juba in South Sidan and i do not hear from him. I was struggling with my baby and i was looking for some money to start a small business.
